Cadogan Pier is a special landing spot for boats on the River Thames in London, UK. It sits on the north side of the river, right next to the famous Albert Bridge. You can find it on Cheyne Walk near Chelsea Embankment. For over 150 years, this pier has been Chelsea's only way to travel by river.

The pier was first built in 1841 by Earl Cadogan. Nathaniel Handford designed it. It was rebuilt around 1875 after the Albert Bridge was finished. Later, in 1905, the London County Council took over the pier and fixed it up. In 1996, a company called Cadogan Pier Limited bought it.

The pier was made longer in 2004. This was done based on designs by Beckett Rankine. Today, the pier is used by Thames Clippers for their RB6 river bus service. This service takes people to Putney and other places.

History of Cadogan Pier

Why the Pier Was Built

Cadogan Pier was first built in 1841. Its main purpose was to help people visit a new area. Lord Cadogan wanted to sell houses in Chelsea. The pier made it easy for potential buyers to arrive by boat. It quickly became a well-known landmark. It was the main river entrance for visitors coming to Chelsea.

Changes Over Time

The pier was rebuilt in 1875. This was to make space for the Albert Bridge. The Albert Bridge is known as one of London's most beautiful bridges. The pier has been used for many important events throughout its long history. For example, in February 2019, it was part of the "Royal Jubilee Pageant."

Keeping the Pier Important

Cadogan Pier Limited has done a lot to improve the pier recently. They brought back the historic 'CADOGAN PIER' sign. They also put up two Union Jack flags. A professional team now keeps the pier well-maintained. The waiting area for the river bus has also been made much better.

The company plans to keep investing in the pier. They want to make sure everyone can use it easily. This includes people with disabilities, families with strollers, and older people. Without these improvements, the pier might not be able to serve the river bus. Chelsea could then lose its only river transport link.
