Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cagiallo is a charming village located in the canton of Ticino, which is a part of Switzerland. It used to be its own separate town, but in 2001, Cagiallo joined with several nearby villages. These villages were Lopagno, Roveredo, Sala Capriasca, Tesserete, and Vaglio. Together, they formed a bigger, new town called Capriasca.

A Look Back: Cagiallo's History

Cagiallo has a long history! It was first written about in the 1200s, when it was called Guzallo. Later, in 1335, its name changed to Cazallo. For many centuries, from the Middle Ages until more recent times, Cagiallo worked closely with the villages of Lopagno and Campestro. They formed a special community group called a Bürgergemeinde. This group helped manage local affairs.

Old Buildings and Churches

The village has some very old buildings. The church of S. Matteo was first built in the Late Middle Ages. It was rebuilt in 1672, but its old Romanesque clock tower was kept. This tower is a cool reminder of the past! Cagiallo was also part of the larger church area of Tesserete.

Other important buildings include the Chapel of St. Lucia, first mentioned in 1606. The Chapel of St. Sebastian in Almatro was built a bit later, in 1682. These chapels show the long history of faith in the area.

Life in the Past

Before big factories and modern jobs, most people in Cagiallo worked in farming. Many also had to leave the village to find work elsewhere. This was common in the 1700s and 1800s. During these centuries, a family called the Battaglini family became very important in the valley. They played a big role in the area's development.

Today, Cagiallo helps support the hotels and tourist spots in the nearby village of Tesserete. It has become a close neighbor, almost like a part of Tesserete itself.

Where is Cagiallo?
