Caguanes National Park (which means Parque Nacional Caguanes in Spanish) is a special protected area in Cuba. It's located in the Yaguajay area, on the northern coast of the Sancti Spíritus Province. This amazing park faces the Atlantic Ocean.

The park covers a large area of about 204.87 square kilometers (79.09 square miles). It includes the Caguanes peninsula, which is a piece of land sticking out into the sea. It also has 10 small islands called cays (Cayos de Piedra) that are found in the beautiful Bay of Buena Vista. This bay is a very important wetland site, recognized by the Ramsar Convention for its unique nature. The park also protects the Guayaberas swamps and thick mangrove forests.

Exploring Caguanes National Park

Caguanes National Park is a fantastic place to explore nature and history. It's known for its beautiful coastal landscape, which has many interesting features.

Caves and Coastline

The coastline of Caguanes National Park is truly unique. It's filled with natural caves, arches, and hidden spots that open up to the sea. So far, experts have counted 79 different caves in this area! These caves are not just cool to look at; they are also home to many creatures and hold secrets from the past.

Amazing Animals

This national park is a living treasure chest of wildlife. It's home to more than 200 different kinds of species. What's even cooler is that 24 of these species are endemic, meaning they can only be found in this specific area of the world!

  • Bird Paradise: Over 112 types of birds make their nests in the park's marshes and coastal areas. You might spot beautiful spoonbills, graceful flamingos, and big pelicans flying around.
  • Bat Caves: One of the most famous spots for animals is the Tres Dolinas cave. It's home to a huge group of mariposa bats. Imagine seeing so many bats flying out at dusk!
  • Nature's Comeback: For a while, the number of migratory water birds was going down because of pollution from nearby sugar mills. But after three sugar mills closed, the pollution in the swamps and bay decreased a lot. By 2007, the bird numbers started to increase again, showing how nature can recover when we help it.

Ancient History

Caguanes National Park isn't just about nature; it's also a place where you can learn about ancient history. There are 35 different archeology sites protected within the park. Most of these sites show evidence of people who lived in caves a very long time ago.

  • Cave Art: In some of the partially underwater cave systems, you can even find ancient cave murals. These paintings give us a peek into the lives of the people who lived here centuries ago. It's like a natural art gallery hidden beneath the earth!
