A Spectacled Caiman in Costa Rica

A Caiman is a type of Alligator. They are like smaller cousins to the true alligators. Caimans and alligators grow a bit slower than other crocodiles. This slower growth means they often live longer lives.

There are six different kinds, or species, of caimans. Most caimans live in South America. However, one type, the Spectacled Caiman, can also be found in Central America.

What is a Caiman?

Caimans belong to the alligator family. This family is split into two main groups: true alligators and caimans. Caimans are known for their bony scales. These scales are found on their bellies and backs. They act like a natural armor.

Types of Caimans

Scientists group caimans into three main types. Each type includes different species.

True Caimans

This group is called Caiman. It includes four well-known species:

Dwarf Caimans

These smaller caimans are part of the Paleosuchus group. They are often called dwarf caimans because of their size.

Black Caiman

The Black Caiman (Melanosuchus niger) is the only member of its group. It is one of the largest predators in the Amazon.
