Where is Cairo, Oregon?
Cairo is found in eastern Oregon. It's about 4 miles (6 km) southwest of a larger town called Ontario. You can find Cairo just north of a spot known as Cairo Junction.
Major Roads Near Cairo
Cairo Junction is an important crossroads. Here, two major U.S. highways, U.S. Route 20 and U.S. Route 26, meet. They run together for a bit, also sharing the path with Oregon Route 201. These roads then turn south, heading towards Nyssa. Route 201 also continues north from Cairo Junction, passing right through Cairo on its way to Ontario.
History of Cairo's Railroad
Cairo was once a stop on the Oregon Short Line Railroad (OSL). This railway line was important for connecting different parts of the region, especially for moving goods and people. Today, this same railway line is part of the main system used by the Union Pacific. Union Pacific is one of the largest freight railroads in North America.
Education in Cairo
Even though Cairo is a small community, it has its own school. The Cairo Elementary School is located in Cairo Junction. This school is part of the Ontario School District, which helps manage schools in the area. The current school building was built in 1957, providing a place for local children to learn for many years.
