Early Life and Education

Caitlin Cherry was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1987. She studied art at some great schools. She earned her first art degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010. Later, she got her master's degree from Columbia University in 2012. She also attended a special art program at Yale University in 2009.

Art and Career

Since 2020, Caitlin has been an assistant professor. She teaches painting and printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University. In 2021, she helped start an online art program. It is called Dark Study. This program helps make art education fair for everyone. It also helps address issues of race and money.

Cherry's art explores important ideas. She looks at how Black women are seen in art and society. She also examines power structures. She uses many different ways to create her art. This includes sculpture, installations, and painting.

Exhibitions

Caitlin Cherry has shown her art in many places. She has had both solo shows and group shows. Her 2019 exhibition, Thread Ripper, got great reviews. It was shown at the Luis De Jesus gallery in Los Angeles.

Other important shows include Monster Energy in 2017. This was at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In 2013, she had a show called Hero Safe. This was at the Brooklyn Museum. For this show, she created three painting-installations. They were part of a project called Raw/Cooked. This project invited Brooklyn artists to have their first big museum shows. Caitlin was the ninth artist featured in this series.

She was inspired by drawings from Leonardo da Vinci. She built large wooden weapons. These acted as supports for her paintings. One example is Dual Capable Catapult Artcraft "Your Last Supper, Sucker," from 2013.

In 2019, her work was part of a traveling exhibition. It was called Young, Gifted, and Black. This show featured art from the Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection.

In 2020, the Luis De Jesus gallery held an online show. It was called Corps Sonore. This show featured Cherry's paintings and digital collages.
