Calcutta, Indiana facts for kids
Calcutta is a small, unincorporated community located in Clay County, Indiana, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town with a mayor and council. Instead, it's usually governed by the county.
History
Calcutta was founded in 1870. It started as a "coal town," which means it was a community that grew up mainly because of a nearby coal mine. Many people moved there to work in the mines.
A post office was opened in Calcutta in 1870. This was an important service for the people living there, allowing them to send and receive mail. However, the post office only stayed open for a few years, closing down in 1879.
