Calder is a neighbourhood in northwest Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was originally part of land owned by the Hudson's Bay Company. The area was first settled by people who worked for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.

Calder started as its own small village called West Edmonton. It was built to house workers for the railway's repair shops and train yards. In 1917, Calder officially became part of the City of Edmonton.

The neighbourhood has clear boundaries. To the west is 127 Street, and to the north is 132 Avenue. On the east side is 113A Street, and 127 Avenue is to the south. A small part of Calder also extends south of 127 Avenue, near the Canadian National rail line.

The community has a group called the Calder Community League. It started in 1920. This league runs a community hall and an outdoor ice rink. These are located at 120 Street and 127 Avenue.

How Calder Became a Part of Edmonton

Calder was once a separate village known as West Edmonton. It officially joined the City of Edmonton on April 17, 1917. The village was first created on July 6, 1910. It covered about one quarter of a square mile.

Within three years of its start, people began calling the community the Village of Calder. The village was located near 127 Street and 127 Avenue. This spot was just north of the Hudson's Bay Company's land.

The railway was very important to Calder's beginning. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway built its train repair shops and train yards nearby. This brought many workers to the area. The first permanent buildings in Calder were built in 1909.
