Caledonia was a small community that used to exist in Cass Township, which is part of Sullivan County, in the state of Indiana, United States. Today, Caledonia is known as a ghost town because it no longer has any residents or buildings.

How Caledonia Disappeared

Caledonia disappeared mainly because of a type of mining called strip mining. This is when miners dig up large areas of the ground to reach coal or other minerals close to the surface.

When a lot of strip mining happened around Caledonia, the town could no longer exist. This activity changed the land so much that people moved away, and the town eventually vanished.

Caledonia did have a post office for a short time. It opened in 1902 and closed just seven years later, in 1909. This shows that the town was not very big or long-lasting.
