The Calf Sound, looking towards the Calf of Man from the direction of Cregneash

The Calf Sound (called Yn Cheyllys in Manx Gaelic) is a narrow stretch of water. It separates the small island of the Calf of Man from the main Isle of Man. This natural strait is about 700 yards wide. It also contains a tiny islet called Kitterland. This islet is home to many seals.

Why is it called 'Calf Sound'?

The name 'Calf' comes from an old language called Old Norse. In Old Norse, the word 'kalfr' means a small island. This name was given because the Calf of Man is a small island located very close to the larger Isle of Man.

What can you do at the Calf Sound Visitor Centre?

A special visitor centre stands overlooking the Calf Sound. It has many interesting exhibits. These exhibits use multimedia to share information about the local wildlife. You can also learn about the history of the area.

The visitor centre is run by Manx National Heritage. It also has a café where you can enjoy a meal. The café offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The building itself was designed to blend in with the natural landscape. Its roof is even covered with turf, which is like grass, to help it look like part of the hill.

How to visit Calf Sound

There is a car park available for visitors. You can also get there by bus. An hourly bus service from Port Erin ends right at the Calf Sound.
