The Calhan Rock Island Railroad Depot is a historic train station in Calhan, Colorado. It was an important stop for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. This railroad helped people travel between Colorado Springs and Kansas.
The depot building was constructed in 1906. It is still standing in its original spot today. The train tracks that once led to the station were removed and sold by 1994.
The Historic Calhan Train Depot
The Calhan train depot was built using a common design for Rock Island railroad stations. It was a single-story building. Inside, it had a waiting room for passengers. There was also a ticket office where people could buy their train tickets. A special area was set aside for storing freight.
What the Depot Looked Like
The building was about 24 feet wide and 64 feet long. It had wooden siding on the outside. Windows in the passenger waiting area faced the train tracks. This allowed people to watch for their trains.
Station workers could see trains coming and going from a special bay window. This window stuck out from the building. Later on, the original wood siding was covered with asbestos siding. Some windows and doors might have been moved from their first locations.
