How Calico Started
Calico, which is short for "California Life Company," was announced on September 18, 2013. It was created before Google changed its company structure in 2015. Arthur D. Levinson, who used to lead a company called Genentech, helped start Calico.
In 2013, Larry Page, one of Google's founders, said that Calico would focus on "health, well-being, and living a long time." In 2015, Calico became part of Alphabet Inc., along with other Google companies.
Important Scientists at Calico
Many smart scientists who study aging have worked at Calico. These include Cynthia Kenyon and Daniel E. Gottschling, who are members of the National Academy of Sciences.
Early employees also included David Botstein, a geneticist, and Robert L. Cohen, a doctor who worked on cancer medicines. Eric Verdin, who leads another research center, also advised the Calico team.
In 2017 and 2018, two important scientists left Calico. Hal Barron, who led their research and development, moved to another company. Daphne Koller, who was in charge of using computers to study biology, left to start her own company. She wanted to use computer learning to help design new medicines.
Working with Other Companies
Calico often works with other companies and research groups. These partnerships help them do more research and develop new ideas faster.
Partnerships for Health Research
In September 2014, Calico teamed up with a company called AbbVie. They decided to work together on research and development (R&D). Their goal was to study aging and diseases that happen as people get older, like problems with the brain and cancer.
Calico uses advanced technology and computers for their early research. AbbVie helps with scientific studies, developing medicines, and getting them ready for people to use. Both companies have promised to invest over $1 billion in this partnership.
In 2015, Calico also started working with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. This partnership helps them learn more about age-related diseases and possible treatments. They also partnered with the Buck Institute for Research on Aging.
Another partnership in 2015 was with QB3. This group focuses on the biology of aging and finding ways to treat age-related illnesses. Calico also worked with AncestryDNA to study how genetics might affect how long people live.
New Discoveries
In October 2023, a science magazine called Nature shared some exciting news. Research showed that a new medicine, called ABBV-CLS-484, could help fight cancer and boost the body's immune cells. This medicine is being developed by both AbbVie and Calico.
