What Does the Waikanae Top Shell Look Like?
The shell of the Waikanae top shell can be anywhere from about 35 millimeters (1.4 inches) to 55 millimeters (2.2 inches) tall. That's roughly the size of a small to medium-sized chicken egg. These shells often have a beautiful, cone-like shape, typical of "top snails."
Where Does the Waikanae Top Shell Live?
You can find the Waikanae top shell in the waters around New Zealand. It also lives near the Kermadec Islands, which are northeast of New Zealand. This marine snail is also found off the coast of Australia, from northern Queensland down to New South Wales.
