The Caln Meeting House is a very old and special building located near Coatesville in Caln Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. It's a historic Quaker meeting house, which is a place where Quakers gather for worship and community activities.

This building was first built way back in 1726. It's made from tan fieldstone, which are natural stones found in fields. In 1801, the building was made bigger to be the size you see today. It's a one-story building, meaning it only has one main floor.

What is the Caln Meeting House?

The Caln Meeting House is a place of worship for the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers. Quakers are a group of people who believe in peace, equality, and living simply. Their meeting houses are usually plain buildings, designed to help people focus on their inner spiritual experience.

A Historic Landmark

In 1984, the Caln Meeting House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important for their history, architecture, or culture. Being on this list helps protect the building and recognize its value.

Still in Use Today

Even though it's very old, the Caln Meeting House is still an active place. Quaker services are held there every week. It's amazing to think that people have been gathering in this same building for hundreds of years!

The Graveyard

Around the meeting house, there are also graveyards. One is right on the northern side of the building. Another graveyard is located across PA 340, a nearby road. These graveyards are the final resting places for many people who were part of the Quaker community over the centuries.

The Old Caln Historical Society

A part of the Caln Meeting House is used by the Old Caln Historical Society. This group works to preserve and share the local history of the Caln area.

A Local History Museum

The historical society uses about one-third of the meeting house as a local history museum. Here, you can find many interesting things that tell the story of the area. They keep old documents, special items, and other historical objects. It's a great place to learn about what life was like in Caln Township a long time ago.
