Calpine is located in California, a state in the western United States. It is part of Sierra County. The area covers about 0.7 square miles (1.8 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a very small amount of water.

A Look Back at Calpine's History

Calpine was started around 1919. It was built to support a large lumber mill called the Davies-Johnson Lumber Mill. A lumber mill is a place where trees are cut into wood for building.

From 1921 to 1940, a special train line helped the town and the mill. This train line was part of the Western Pacific Railroad and ran from Portola, California. However, by 1939, most of the trees in the area had been cut down. Because of this, the mill closed soon after.

The name "Calpine" might have come from a shorter version of the last name "McAlpine."
