Calumet, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Calumet is a small, unincorporated community located in eastern Pike County, in the state of Missouri, USA. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government or mayor like a city or town.

This community is found where two roads, Missouri routes N and D, meet. It's about six miles (or about 10 kilometers) southwest of a town called Clarksville. It's also about six miles north of another town named Eolia. A stream called Calumet Creek flows just south of the community.

A Look at Calumet's Past

Calumet has a bit of history tied to its name. A post office was opened in Calumet in 1872. This post office helped people send and receive mail for many years. It stayed open until 1907.

The community itself got its name from the nearby Calumet Creek. It's common for places to be named after natural features like rivers or streams that are close by.
