Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Calvados Roger Groult is a special kind of apple brandy called Calvados. It is made by the Groult family at their home, the Clos de la Hurvanière. This place is in Saint-Cyr-du-Ronceray, a village in Normandy, France. The area is known as the Pays d'Auge, which is famous for its delicious ciders and Calvados.

The Story of Calvados Roger Groult

The Groult family has lived at the Clos de la Hurvanière since the 1700s. They have a long history of making this special drink.

Early Beginnings

Around 1850, a family member named Pierre Groult (who lived from 1830 to 1918) started making Calvados. He would distill, or purify, cider to create the brandy. Pierre bought a special machine called a pot still to help him make more. He also built a cellar to store the Calvados. Before Pierre, Calvados was usually sold in big wooden barrels. But Pierre started putting it into bottles, which was a new idea then.

Growing the Business

Pierre's son, Leon Groult (1874-1923), took over the business. People wanted more Calvados, so Leon built another cellar to store and age the drink. This helped the family meet the growing demand.

Later, Leon's son, Roger Groult (1905-1988), continued to expand the distillery. In 1975, he officially created a company called "Calvados Roger Groult SA." This company was set up to make and sell Calvados to more people.

New Generations

Roger's son, Jean-Pierre Groult (1946-2008), then led the company. He created a new business plan to buy apples from nearby farms. This helped him make even more Calvados. In 1980, Jean-Pierre built two very large cellars. These cellars could store huge amounts of Calvados for aging. This allowed the company to sell their products to hotels and restaurants in other countries.

In 2008, Jean-Pierre's son, Jean-Roger, became the head of the family business. Jean-Roger Groult is also a founder of a new group called Esprit Calvados. This group brings together five family-owned Calvados businesses in the Pays d'Auge region.

A Family Business Today

Calvados Roger Groult SA is still an independent company owned by the Groult family. It employs eight people who work together to continue the family's tradition of making Calvados.
