Local Leadership: Serving His Community
Before becoming a politician for the whole territory, Calvin Pokiak helped lead his hometown, Tuktoyaktuk. He started as a councilor on the Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk council. A councilor helps make decisions for the local community. Later, he became the mayor of Tuktoyaktuk. The mayor is the main leader of a town or city.
Territorial Politics: Representing Nunakput
In 2003, Pokiak decided to run for a bigger role. He wanted to become a politician for the entire Northwest Territories. He ran in the 2003 Northwest Territories general election. He successfully won the election for the Nunakput area. This meant he became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). An MLA helps make laws and decisions for the whole territory. He won against the person who held the seat before him, Vince Steen.
Time as an MLA
Calvin Pokiak served as the MLA for Nunakput from 2003 to 2007. During this time, he worked to represent the people of his region. He helped bring their concerns to the government.
Seeking Re-election
In the 2007 Northwest Territories general election, Pokiak tried to be re-elected for a second term. However, he was not successful this time. He finished fourth among the four candidates running for the Nunakput seat. After this, he was no longer an MLA.
