Calytrix gracilis is a beautiful plant from the myrtle family. It is a type of shrub that grows only in Western Australia. This means it is endemic to that part of the world.
About the Starflower
This special shrub is also known as a starflower because of its pretty blooms. It usually grows to be about 0.2 to 1 metre (1 to 3 ft) tall.
The Calytrix gracilis plant shows off its lovely flowers between August and October. These flowers are a striking violet-blue color and are shaped like tiny stars.
Where the Starflower Grows
You can find Calytrix gracilis in specific parts of Western Australia. It likes to grow on sandy ridges and among rocky areas.
The plant is found in the Mid West and Wheatbelt regions. This area stretches between Geraldton and the Swan Coastal Plain. It prefers sandy soils or sandy-loam soils that are found over laterite rock.
How the Starflower Was Discovered
A famous botanist named George Bentham first officially described this plant. He did this in 1867. His description was part of a larger work called Flora Australiensis.
Later, in 1882, another botanist named Ferdinand von Mueller also described it. He gave it a slightly different name, Calycothrix gracilis. However, Calytrix gracilis is the name we use today.
