History of Camaleño
Camaleño has been around for a very long time. Many important events happened here centuries ago.
Early Events and Legends
One old story tells us about a big battle in 722. After this fight, some surviving soldiers were caught in a huge avalanche of stones in a village called Cosgaya, which is part of Camaleño. It sounds like a dramatic event from long ago!
Another interesting historical fact is about King Favila of Asturias. He was the second king of Asturias. Sadly, in 739, King Favila died in this very valley. He was killed by a bear. This shows how wild and untamed the area might have been back then.
The Important Monastery
Long ago, there was a special monastery in a place called Turieno. It was dedicated to San Martín. This monastery held very important religious items. One was a large piece of the Cross of Christ. Another was the body of Santo Toribio, who was believed to have brought these items all the way from Palestine.
Over time, this monastery became a famous place for pilgrims. People would travel from far away to visit it. Different popes even gave it special recognition. In the 1100s, the monastery became part of a larger group called Oña. Later, powerful families, like the Marquises of Santillana and the Duke of Infantado, gained control over the valley.
Changes in Local Government
For many years, Camaleño was part of the judicial district of Potes. A judicial district is an area where a court has power. This changed in the late 1970s. After that, Camaleño became part of the judicial district of San Vicente de la Barquera. This means it falls under the legal system of that area now.
