Camariñas is a beautiful coastal town, also known as a municipality, located in the northwest of Spain. It's part of the A Coruña province in the region called Galicia. This area is famous for its stunning coastline and rich traditions.

Camariñas is well-known for two main things: its important fishing port and the incredible bobbin lace made by local women. These talented women are called palilleiras, and their detailed lace work is famous all over Spain.

To the northwest of Camariñas, you'll find the amazing cliffs of Cape Vilan (Cabo Vilán). This area is a protected natural site. It's called "Cape Villain" because of the strong ocean currents and many shipwrecks that have happened there over time.

What is a Municipality?

A municipality is like a local government area, similar to a town or a small city. It has its own mayor and local council that manage things like schools, roads, and local services for the people living there. Camariñas is one such municipality in Spain.

The Art of Bobbin Lace

One of the most special things about Camariñas is its traditional bobbin lace. This is a type of lace made by hand using many small wooden bobbins. The palilleiras (the women who make the lace) skillfully twist and cross threads around pins on a cushion to create beautiful and complex patterns.

This craft has been passed down through generations in Camariñas. It's not just a hobby; it's an important part of the town's culture and economy. You can even visit the Museum of Bobbin Lace in Camariñas to see how it's made and learn about its history.

Cabo Vilán: A Natural Wonder

Cape Vilan (Cabo Vilán) is a dramatic and beautiful headland near Camariñas. It features impressive cliffs that rise high above the Atlantic Ocean. The views from here are breathtaking, especially at sunset.

Cabo Vilán is also home to one of the oldest electric lighthouses in Spain. This lighthouse has guided ships safely past the dangerous coastline for many years. The area around the cape is a protected natural space, meaning it's important for its wildlife and natural beauty.

Population Over Time

The number of people living in Camariñas has changed quite a bit over the years. In the late 1800s, there were around 3,600 people. The population grew steadily, reaching its highest point in the 1970s with over 8,000 residents. Since then, the population has slowly decreased, with about 5,300 people living in Camariñas in 2018.
