Camila Merino Catalán is an important figure in Chilean politics and business. She is an industrial engineer by profession. Currently, she serves as the Mayor of Vitacura, a city in Chile. Before becoming mayor, she was also a Minister in the Chilean government.
Early Life and Education
Camila Merino was born on September 21, 1967. She grew up and completed her school studies at Colegio Alianza Francesa in Concepción, Chile. After finishing school, she went on to study at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. There, she earned a degree in Industrial Engineering.
She continued her education by getting an MBA (Master of Business Administration) from the MIT Sloan School of Management in the United States. An MBA is a special degree that teaches people how to manage businesses and organizations. She also studied at the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris in France. Camila Merino is married to Enrique Elsaca Hirmas.
Career in Business
Camila Merino started her professional career in 1991. She worked as an executive for a large company called Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile (SQM). She stayed with SQM for 16 years, holding many important roles. These included being the Vice-president of Administration and Manager of Corporate Services, Human Resources, and Mining.
During her time at SQM, she lived and worked in Antofagasta for several years. She also served as a director for the Association of Local Industries there. Later, in December 2007, she was chosen to be the General Manager of Santiago Metro. This is the subway system in Santiago, Chile's capital city. She managed a big project to extend two of the subway lines, which helped many people travel around the city.
Political Journey
Camila Merino's journey into politics began in February 2010. She was chosen by Chile's President-elect, Sebastián Piñera, to be the Minister of Labor and Social Forecast. A minister is a high-ranking official in the government who is in charge of a specific department. As Minister of Labor, she worked on policies related to jobs and social support for people in Chile.
After her time as a minister, Camila Merino continued her public service. In June 2021, she was elected as the Mayor of Vitacura. As mayor, she is responsible for leading the local government and making decisions that affect the people living in Vitacura.
