Camila Merino Catalán is an expert in making things work better, called an industrial engineer. She used to be a government minister in Chile, helping with jobs and social care. Today, she is the Mayor of Vitacura, a city in Chile.
Early Life and Education
Camila Merino grew up and went to school in Concepción, Chile. She studied Industrial Engineering at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. This means she learned how to make companies and systems run smoothly.
She also earned a special business degree, an MBA, from a famous school called MIT Sloan School of Management in the United States. She also studied in Paris, France. Camila is married to Enrique Elsaca Hirmas. They have four children.
Working Life
In 1991, Camila started working for a company called Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile (SQM). She worked there for 16 years. She held important jobs, like managing how the company was run and taking care of its employees. She even worked in Antofagasta for several years.
Later, in 2007, she was chosen to be the General Manager of Santiago Metro. This is the subway system in Santiago, Chile. She took charge of a huge project to make the subway lines longer, which cost almost 1 billion US dollars.
Becoming a Politician
In February 2010, the President-elect of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, asked Camila Merino to join his government. She became the Minister of Labor and Social Forecast. This job meant she was in charge of helping people find jobs and making sure they had social support.
Today, Camila Merino is the Mayor of Vitacura. As mayor, she helps lead the city and makes decisions that affect its residents.
