Camille Roy (born October 22, 1870 – died June 24, 1943) was a Canadian priest and a literary critic. This means he studied and wrote about books and stories. He wrote a lot about how French-Canadian literature grew. He also showed how important it was for keeping the French language, culture, and Christian ideas alive in Canada.

Early Life and School

Camille Roy was born in a place called Berthier-en-Bas, which is now known as Berthier-sur-Mer in Quebec. He went to school at the Petit Séminaire of Quebec and then the Grand Séminaire de Québec. In 1896, he became a priest.

His Work and Writings

Camille Roy started writing articles and essays about literature in 1902. Many of his writings were printed in newspapers and magazines. In 1907, he put many of these essays together in a book called Essais sur la littérature canadienne.

In 1912, he also put together and published a collection of stories about life in Canada. He wrote a book called Nos origines littéraires in 1909. In this book, he talked about how French literature from France influenced writers in Canada.

Roy also wrote a lot about how people should study literature. One of his important books on this topic was Manuel d'histoire de la littérateure canadienne-française, which came out in 1920.

Leading Université Laval

Camille Roy was the head, or rector, of Université Laval several times. He held this important position from 1922 to 1924, again in 1929, from 1932 to 1938, and finally from 1940 to 1943.

During these years, he gave many talks and wrote a lot about French-Canadian culture. He focused on how this culture was shown through its literature. In 1929, he was given a special award called the Lorne Pierce Medal for his work.
