A Glimpse into Camp Sierra's Past

Camp Sierra has an interesting history, especially with its name. It wasn't always called Camp Sierra!

What Was Camp Sierra Called Before?

Originally, this community was known as Sierra Chautauqua. The name "Chautauqua" might sound a bit unusual. It comes from a famous educational movement that started in New York State. These "Chautauqua" gatherings were popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They offered lectures, concerts, and classes, often in beautiful outdoor settings. It seems the founders of this California community wanted to bring that same spirit of learning and community to the Sierra Nevada mountains.

When Did the Name Change?

The Sierra Chautauqua post office first opened its doors in 1918. A few years later, in 1924, the name of the community officially changed to Camp Sierra. The post office continued to serve the area for a while but eventually closed in 1935.
