Life on Guadalupe Island
Guadalupe Island has a few small communities. These communities are home to people who work there. The island is a special place for fishing and other activities.
West Camp: A Fishing Community
Campo Oeste, also called Campo Tepeyac, is a small village. It has about 15 buildings. This community is on the western side of the island. It is a safe spot for boats because of a bay called West Anchorage. This bay protects them from strong winds.
People here are mostly fishermen. They catch abalone and lobster. The number of fishermen changes each year. It depends on the fishing season. About 30 families live here for ten months a year. They are part of a fishing group. Generators provide electricity for the camp. A military ship brings fresh water, about 30,000 liters (7,900 gallons) at a time.
Campo Bosque: Goat Removal Efforts
Campo Bosque was set up in 1999. It is a temporary camp in the cypress forest. This camp helps with a special project. People here remove goats from the island. They sell the goats in the State of Sonora. This helps protect the island's natural environment. They have permission from the Mexican government to do this work.
Guadalupe Island Airport
The island also has a small airport. It is called Campo Pista. The airport is near the center of the island. Its runway is 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) long. The airport's code is MMGD.
Past Plane Wrecks
You might see some old plane parts near the runway. One is from a Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar. It went off the runway when it landed. Another plane was a B-25 Mitchell bomber. It crashed while trying to take off. This bomber was removed from the area between 2005 and 2006.
Visiting the Island
Guadalupe Island is a biosphere reserve. This means it is a protected natural area. To visit the island, you need special permission. You must get a permit from the Mexican government. This helps keep the island safe and protected. Because of this, the communities on the island are not open to everyone.
