Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Campbells of Barrichbeyan are a part of the Campbells of Craignish family. They are a branch of the larger Clan Campbell, a famous Scottish clan from Argyll in the Scottish Highlands.

This family line comes from Donald McEan Gorm Campbell. He was the second son of John Ean Gorm Campbell, who was the 9th leader of Craignish. Donald became the 1st Baron Campbell of Barrichbeyan. His family kept the Barrichbeyan lands and even bought back most of the Craignish estate between 1550 and 1680.

Besides the main Campbells of Craignish, there were also other smaller family lines. These included the Campbells of Lagganlochan, the Campbells of Ballachlavan, and later, the Campbells of Askomel.

The Campbells of Barrichbeyan Estate

Barrichbeyan (sometimes spelled Barrichibean or Barrichebean) is a place on the northern part of the Craignish peninsula. It used to belong to the MacIgheil family.

Donald McEan Gorm Campbell, the son of John Ean Gorm Campbell, married Effreta. She was the daughter of the last MacIgheil leader of Barrichbeyan. This marriage made Donald the first Campbell leader of Barrichbeyan.

Later, John Campbell, the 6th Baron of Barrichbeyan, had five sons:

  • Donald "Ronald Roy" Campbell, who became the 7th Baron of Barrichbeyan.
  • Archibald Campbell, who did not have children.
  • John Campbell, who sadly died in Java during a rebellion.
  • George Campbell, who started the Campbells of Ballachlavan family line.
  • Alexander Campbell, who was the ancestor of the Campbells of Barrowlerie.

Donald "Ronald Roy" Campbell, the 7th Baron of Barrichbeyan, was born in 1555 and passed away in 1639.

The Campbells of Lagganlochan family line comes from Farquhard Campbell of Lagganlochan. He was the third, but second surviving, son of Donald (Ronald Roy) Campbell, who was a leader of both Barrichbeyan and Craignish.

His son, Ronald, became the second Baron Craignish in 1897. He was born on April 6, 1866. When he died in 1920 without any children, the title of Baron Craignish ended.

Barons Campbell von Laurentz (Saxe-Coburg and Gotha)

Edmund Kempt Laurentz Campbell was the younger brother of Ronald MacLeay Laurentz Campbell, the first Baron Craignish. Born on July 8, 1848, Edmund also served as an aide to the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

He showed great bravery in August 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War. On August 16, at the Battle of Mars-La-Tour/Gravelotte, he was hurt while leading a cavalry charge against the French army. For his courage, he was given the Iron Cross medal.

In 1886, Duke Ernest II made him Baron Campbell of Laurentz. In February 1887, he was allowed to use this title in the United Kingdom. Edmund Campbell did not have children, and when he died in 1917, his Barony title also ended.
