Camuy barrio-pueblo is a special part of Camuy, a town in Puerto Rico. It is the main downtown area, also known as the administrative center or "seat" of the municipality. In 2010, about 3,354 people lived here.
In Puerto Rico, like in Spain, each town has a central area called a pueblo. This area usually has a main square, the town hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, special celebrations called Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in this central square.

The Heart of Camuy: The Central Plaza
The central plaza, or town square, is a very important place. It's used for both official events and fun activities. People gather here to relax and socialize from morning until night.
Spanish laws from the early 1800s, called the Laws of the Indies, guided how towns in Puerto Rico were built. These laws said the plaza should be big enough for celebrations. They also said that streets nearby should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
Camuy's central plaza is named the Plaza de Recreo Luis Muñoz Marín. It's a great spot for everyone to enjoy.
A Look at San José Church
Right across from the central plaza in Camuy barrio-pueblo is the Parroquia San José. This is a Roman Catholic church with a long history.
- Early Days: In 1807, there was a wooden church on this spot. Sadly, it was destroyed in a fire.
- New Beginnings: A second church was opened in 1823. Then, in 1841, construction began on a stronger cement church. This new church was finished in 1854.
- Challenges and Changes: In 1928, the church was damaged by a big storm called the San Felipe Segundo hurricane. Later, in 1972, the old church was taken down. A brand new church was built in its place in 1974.
Every May, Camuy celebrates its patron saint festival. This festival honors Saint Joseph and takes place at the Plaza de Recreo Luis Muñoz Marín in Camuy barrio-pueblo.
A Glimpse into History
Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
In 1899, the United States government counted the people in Puerto Rico. They found that 989 people lived in Camuy barrio-pueblo at that time. The population has changed quite a bit over the years.
