About the Canaan Chapel
Where is the Chapel Located?
The Canaan Chapel is found in the western part of Barrington. It sits on the north side of Canaan Road, which is also United States Route 202. It's right where Canaan Road meets Canaan Back Road.
What Does the Chapel Look Like?
The chapel is a one-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof, called a gable roof. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards, known as clapboard. The building rests on a strong stone foundation.
Inside the Chapel
When you go inside, you first enter a small entrance area called a vestibule. There's a small room to the right of this area. The main part of the building is a large room, like an auditorium. This room is about 24 feet wide and 32 feet long.
At the far end of the main room, there's a raised stage. In the middle of this stage, you'll find a raised pulpit. This is where a speaker would stand. To the left of the pulpit, there's an old organ from 1890. It was made by the Boston Organ Company. Most of the room is filled with the original wooden pews, which are the long benches where people sit.
The Horse Shed
The property also includes an old horse shed. This shed was built around 1898. In the past, people would use it to shelter their horses when they came to church.
History of the Chapel
The Canaan Chapel was built in 1881. It is one of the few remaining churches from the Free Will Baptist group in the area. The Free Will Baptist church started nearby in New Durham in 1780. This religious group grew and spread through the small towns of eastern New Hampshire.
Most of the churches built by this group were from the mid-1800s. The Canaan Chapel is special because it was built a bit later. Even so, it still has the simple Greek Revival style that older churches from that time often had. The building has not changed much over the years. The main updates include adding electricity and replacing the old wood stove.
