Canada is a small place in Pike County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own separate local government like a city or town does. Instead, the larger Pike County handles services for the area.

Canada is located along U.S. Route 119. It is about 13.8 miles (22.2 kilometers) northeast of a bigger city called Pikeville.

The Name Canada: Two Possible Stories

Have you ever wondered how a place in Kentucky got the name "Canada"? There are two main ideas about where this unique name came from.

Native American Roots

One idea is that the name "Canada" comes from a word used by the Huron-Iroquois people. Their word "kanata" means "settlement" or "village." Long ago, this area of Kentucky was home to many Native American groups. So, it's possible they used a similar word to describe their homes, which later became the name for this community.

A General's Connection

Another interesting theory connects the name to a famous person. Zebulon Pike was a general during the War of 1812. He is also the person that most of Pike County, where Canada is located, is named after. General Pike sadly died in Canada. Because of this connection, some people believe the community was named "Canada" in his honor.
