Discovering the Candace Allen House
This special house was built between 1818 and 1820. A famous local architect named John Holden Greene designed it. The house is built in the Federal style, which was a popular way to design buildings in the United States during the late 1700s and early 1800s. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, which means it's officially recognized as an important historical building.
What Does the House Look Like?
The Candace Allen House is made of brick and has two stories. It has a special roof called a hip roof, which slopes down on all four sides. On top of the roof, there's a small section called a monitor. The front of the house is wide, with five sections for windows and doors.
The main entrance is in the middle. It has a beautiful porch supported by fancy columns called Corinthian columns. Above the main door, there's a unique oval-shaped window.
Inside the Historic Home
When you step inside, the house has a typical layout with a hallway right in the center. The inside of the house is very detailed and fancy. It has:
- Fireplaces with marble decorations
- A U-shaped staircase
- Special designs around the edges of the ceilings
- Detailed wooden carvings
- Walnut wood doors with silver handles
Who Was Candace Allen?
Candace Allen was born in 1785 and lived until 1872. She was the older sister of Zachariah Allen, a very important person in Providence who owned mills and invented many things. Candace never got married because her fiancé sadly passed away during the War of 1812. In 1973, when the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places, it was still owned by the Allen family.
