Candy Palmater (born December 4, 1968 – died December 25, 2021) was a talented Canadian actress, comedian, and broadcaster. She created and wrote her own TV show called The Candy Show for APTN. She also hosted a daily interview show on CBC Radio One in 2016.

Early Life and Education

Candy Palmater was born on December 4, 1968, in Point La Nim, New Brunswick. She grew up as the youngest of seven children. In high school, she was very active in sports.

After high school, Candy studied at St. Thomas University. She then took a course to become a legal secretary.

Later, she was inspired to study law because of an unfair legal case involving Donald Marshall Jr.. In 1996, she went to Dalhousie University to study law. She graduated in 1999 as the top student in her class. She was the first Indigenous law student in Canada to be the valedictorian. She also led the Dalhousie Aboriginal Law Students Association.

Candy worked at a law firm for a short time. However, she soon realized she preferred other work. She then started working for the government's education department in Nova Scotia.

Her Career in Entertainment

Candy Palmater was a regular voice on CBC Radio. She often shared her thoughts on shows like Definitely Not the Opera. She also wrote columns for a Halifax newspaper, focusing on Mi'kmaq History Month.

CBC Newsworld even made a one-hour documentary about her, also called The Candy Show. This show later became a popular comedy series on APTN. Candy was also a frequent performer at comedy clubs across Canada. She often hosted fun events and galas.

In 2011, Candy produced her first film. It was called Building Legends: The Mi'Kmaq Canoe Project.

As an actress, Candy appeared in TV shows. These included Forgive Me and Trailer Park Boys.

Her own daily radio show, The Candy Palmater Show, started on CBC Radio in May 2016. After that, she was a guest host for the popular radio show Q. In 2017, she was a panelist on Canada Reads. She supported the book The Break by Katherena Vermette.

Candy was also a frequent guest on the CBC Radio One comedy show Because News. She had a role in the CBC Television sitcom Run the Burbs, which aired after her passing.

Awards and Recognition

Candy Palmater was nominated for several awards. In 2013, she was nominated for an East Coast Music Award. The Candy Show was also nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for its great direction. For her acting in Forgive Me, she was nominated for an ACTRA Award.

In 2017, Candy received the Bonham Centre Award. This award recognized her important work. It honored her contributions to understanding and teaching about diversity.

Her Passing

Candy Palmater passed away at her home in Toronto on December 25, 2021. She was 53 years old. Before her death, she received medical care in the hospital for a serious health condition.

Her book, Running Down a Dream, was published after she passed away in 2022.
