Cangallo is a town in southern Peru. It is the capital of the Cangallo Province in the Ayacucho Region. The town is located about 2,577 meters (8,455 feet) above sea level.

The Morochuco people, who are mestizos (people of mixed European and Indigenous heritage), live in the Cangallo region. They are known for their strong spirit and connection to the land.

Cangallo's Fight for Independence (1814–1822)

For many years, native Peruvians and mestizos faced unfair treatment from the Spanish rulers. This led to many local leaders being punished or even killed by the Spanish government, known as the viceroyalty.

Because of this, people in the Cangallo region decided to fight for their freedom. In 1814, the Morochuco people bravely declared their independence from Spain.

Battles for Freedom

The Morochuco farmers fought many battles against the Spanish colonial troops. These fights took place in different areas around Cangallo, like Matará, Rucumachay, Atunguana, and Atuntoqto. Their fight for independence continued for several years, until 1821.

Basilio Auqui: A Morochuco Hero

One of the most important Morochuco leaders was Basilio Auqui. He was very clever in his strategies against the Spanish.

In November 1821, Basilio Auqui prepared a special trap. He made a muddy field in a place called Seqchapampa. When Spanish cavalry (soldiers on horseback) came, Auqui's fighters pretended to run away. The Spanish chased them into the mud trap, and their horses got stuck. This was a big victory for the Morochuco people!

The Spanish Revenge and Tragedy

The Spanish were very angry about this defeat. In December 1821, a Spanish leader named José Domingo Carratalá led a strong attack on Cangallo. The Spanish troops destroyed the town and sadly, many people were killed, including older men, women, and children.

The End of the Resistance

Even after this terrible event, Basilio Auqui's units continued to fight. However, in 1822, the resistance movement came to an end. The Spanish leader Carratalá offered a reward (called "head money") for Basilio Auqui's capture. Someone named Quinto betrayed Auqui to get the money.

Basilio Auqui was captured and taken to Ayacucho. He was executed by shooting in the Plaza de Santa Teresa. Today, there is a monument in Ayacucho to honor Basilio Auqui, the brave hero of the Cangallo Morochuco resistance.
