Cangas Left Alternative (its name in Galician is Alternativa Canguesa de Esquerda, or ACE for short) is a group of three political parties and other people who are not part of a specific party. They work together in the town of Cangas, Pontevedra, in Spain. ACE is a political group that focuses on ideas like protecting the environment and supporting community efforts.

History of Cangas Left Alternative

Early Years and First Elections (2007)

In the local elections held on May 27, 2007, ACE received 1,890 votes. This was about 13.1% of all the votes. Because of this, they won three seats on the town council. The town council is like a local government that makes decisions for the community.

After the election, ACE joined a government with two other political groups. These groups were the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) and the Socialists' Party of Galicia (PSdG).

Breaking Agreements and Community Support (2010)

On January 28, 2010, ACE decided to leave the government agreement. They made this decision in a public meeting. They felt that the BNG group was not treating their elected members fairly.

ACE also supported a local community group called A Ría Non se Vende. This name means "The ría is not for sale." This group was protesting against plans to build a new port. The proposed port area had important historical and natural value. Many people from Cangas protested against the new port. Some members of ACE were also involved in these protests.

Continued Presence in Local Government (2011-2019)

In the 2011 local elections, ACE got 1,744 votes, which was about 12.77% of the total. They kept their three seats on the town council.

In the 2015 local elections, ACE did even better. They won four town council seats. For the first time, ACE's leader became the mayor of Cangas. This happened because ACE made an agreement with the BNG and another group called Assembly for Unity (ASpUN).

In the 2019 elections, ACE continued to be strong. They received 2,301 votes, which was 16.98% of the total. They kept their four seats on the town council.

Recent Elections (2023)

In the 2023 election, ACE asked its supporters to vote for a group called Alternativa dos Veciños (AV). This group received 863 votes, which was 6.4% of the total. They won one seat on the town council.
