Cangas Left Alternative (Alternativa Canguesa de Esquerda in Galician language; ACE) is a group of political parties and independent people. They work together in the town of Cangas, Pontevedra, in Galicia, Spain. ACE is known for its left-wing ideas, which include Communism and Ecologism (caring for the environment).
How ACE Started and Grew
In the local elections of May 27, 2007, ACE got 1,890 votes. This was about 13.1% of all votes. They won three spots as "councilors" in the town council. A councilor is someone elected to help manage the town.
ACE joined a government with two other parties, the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) and the Socialists' Party of Galicia (PSdG). But on January 28, 2010, ACE decided to leave this agreement. They felt that the BNG party was not fair to their elected members.
ACE also supported a local group called A Ría Non se Vende. This means "The ría (estuary) is not for sale." This group protested against plans to build a new port. The port would have been in an area important for its history and nature. There were demonstrations against these plans.
In the 2011 local elections, ACE received 1,744 votes. They kept their 3 councilors. In the 2015 local elections, ACE did even better. They gained 4 town councilors. For the first time, ACE also got the "mayorship" of Cangas. The mayor is the main leader of the town. This happened because ACE made an agreement with the BNG and Assembly for Unity (ASpUN).
In the 2023 election, ACE asked people to vote for another group called Alternativa dos Veciños (AV). This group won 863 votes, which was 6.4% of the total. They also gained one seat in the town council.
