The Cannabaceae are a family of plants. They are part of the rose order. This family includes 11 different groups of plants, called genera, and about 270 types of plants, called species. These plants are often aromatic, meaning they have a strong smell. You can find them mostly in the cooler, northern parts of the world.
What are Cannabaceae plants like?
Plants in the Cannabaceae family can either grow straight up or climb. Their flowers do not have petals. They produce dry fruits that contain just one seed.
Long ago, scientists used to put two important plants, Cannabis (hemp) and Humulus (hop), into a different family called the mulberry family. Another group of plants, the hackberry family (Celtidaceae), was also once separate. Now, all these plants are grouped together in the Cannabaceae family.
Important plants in the family
Only two plants from this family are very important for people's economies. These are hemp (Cannabis) and hop (Humulus). Hemp is used to make fibers, paper, and other products. Hops are famous for being a key ingredient in making beer.
