Cannakill is an old, abandoned village in County Offaly, Ireland. It's a place where people used to live a long time ago, but now only its ruins remain. These ruins help us learn about Ireland's past.

Where is Cannakill?

Cannakill is found in County Offaly, Ireland. It is located west of Croghan Hill. The village is also south of the Yellow River. It's about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) northwest of the modern village of Croghan.

A Look Back in Time: History of Cannakill

Cannakill was one of many villages built by the Normans. The Normans were people from France who came to Ireland in the late 1100s. They took control of many parts of the country.

Why Was Cannakill Abandoned?

The village of Cannakill was abandoned after the year 1385. This happened because the local Irish lords, known as the O'Connor Faly (or Ua Conchobhair Failghe), fought back. They won an important battle called the Battle of Tochar Cruachain-Bri-Ele. After this victory, the Irish lords regained control of the area. The Norman village of Cannakill was then left empty.

What Remains of the Village?

Today, you can still see parts of Cannakill. The main things left are the low stone walls, called "footings," of four houses. These footings show us where the houses once stood.

During the 1940s, people were digging for stone nearby. They found old pottery pieces and animal bones south of the village. These discoveries help archaeologists learn more about the people who lived there. They also tell us about the animals they kept or hunted.
