History of Canoa
Canoa is located north of Bahía de Caraquez in the Manabí Province. Old stories say that the native people of Canoa would hide in the hills when they saw newcomers approaching. This left the beautiful beach empty.
Early Days and Names
About 100 years later, Jesuit priests arrived in the area. They joined with the local Canoans to create a new Spanish community. In its earliest days, Canoa was known by different names, such as Pantaguas or Pintagua.
Canoa on the Map
A priest named Juan de Velasco was the first person to put Canoa on a map. This map showed the old Kingdom of Quito. As the 1900s began, Canoa's beach was officially recognized. It became part of the Cantón Sucre, which included Bahía de Caraquez. Later, near the end of the 1900s, Canoa was officially registered as part of the San Vicente Canton.
Surfing in Canoa
Canoa is known as one of the best places to learn how to surf. The waves are great all day, every day of the year. This is because the sandy bottom of the beach helps create good waves. The ocean swells come from both the north and the south.
Warm Ocean Water
The water in Canoa is warm all year round. This is because the town is very close to the Equator. This makes it a comfortable place for surfers and swimmers alike.
Recovery After the Earthquake
In 2016, Canoa experienced a big earthquake. The town was damaged quite a bit. However, the people of Canoa have worked hard to rebuild. The town has recovered well and is now fully open for visitors and tourism.
