The Name's Origin

The name "Canonchet" comes from a famous leader of the Narragansett people. He was a sachem, which means a chief or leader. This sachem, also named Canonchet, lived in the area a long time ago. He played a role in a historical conflict known as King Philip's War. This war was a major event between Native American tribes and English colonists in the 1670s.

Getting Around Canonchet

Canonchet is located northeast of the center of Hopkinton. Two important roads pass through the village. These are Interstate 95 and Rhode Island Route 3. Interstate 95 is a major highway that runs along the East Coast of the United States. Exit 2 for Interstate 95 is right in Canonchet, making it easy to get to and from the village.

How Many People Live There?

In 1920, the United States Census counted the number of people living in Canonchet. At that time, the village had a population of 124 people.
