History of the Cantabrian Water Dog

The Cantabrian Water Dog has a long history in the north of Spain. Its ancestors might be related to the Barbet breed. These dogs have been important to the towns and villages along the coast of Cantabria and eastern Asturias.

What these dogs did

For many years, these dogs helped with fishing. They would collect fish that fell into the water. They also watched over boats when they were in the port. Sometimes, they even carried ropes between ships or to the dock. They were also known for acting like lifeguards.

Features of the Cantabrian Water Dog

The Cantabrian Water Dog looks and acts a bit different from other water dogs. Scientists have studied their genes. This helps us tell them apart from similar dogs. They are related to the Spanish Water Dog and the Barbet.
