Cantata facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A cantata is a special type of music that is sung with instruments playing along. Think of it like a mini-concert, but often telling a story or sharing a message through song. The word "cantata" comes from the Italian word "cantare," which means "to sing."

For a long time, especially in the 1600s and 1700s, cantatas were popular. They were usually sung by a choir, by solo singers, or both. The singers were always joined by musical instruments.

What is a Cantata?

A cantata is different from a cappella singing. A cappella means singing without any instruments at all. In a cantata, the instruments are a very important part of the music.

Religious and Non-Religious Cantatas

Many cantatas were written for church services. These are called sacred cantatas because they have religious words. One of the most famous composers of sacred cantatas was Johann Sebastian Bach. He wrote hundreds of them!

Bach often used well-known church hymns, called chorales, in his cantatas. These hymns would be sung by the choir, and sometimes the whole church congregation would join in.

Other composers wrote secular cantatas. These cantatas were not religious. They might tell stories about love, nature, or other everyday topics. For example, Alessandro Scarlatti (who lived from 1660 to 1725) wrote many secular cantatas.

Famous Cantata Composers

The most famous cantatas were written by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Almost all of his cantatas were for church services. They were a big part of Sunday worship in his time.

How Bach's Cantatas Work

Bach's cantatas often started and ended with a chorale. These were like familiar hymns that people knew. In between these chorales, there were parts for solo singers.

  • Recitatives: These parts sound a bit like talking set to music. The singer tells a part of the story or message.
  • Arias: These are more like regular songs. The singer expresses feelings or thoughts in a beautiful melody.

A famous example is Bach's Cantata No. 80. It is based on the hymn "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott," which means "A safe stronghold our God is still." The whole cantata is about feeling safe with God. The sermon in church would often be about the same idea. Towards the end, the church members would sing the chorale along with the choir.

Cantatas in Modern Times

Even in the 20th century, composers still wrote cantatas. Composers like Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) and Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) created their own cantatas. This shows how this type of musical form has changed and grown over time. Today, the word "cantata" can describe almost any song or group of songs that are sung with instruments.
