Canton is a small place in Indiana, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Washington Township in Washington County.
History of Canton
How Canton Started
Canton was first planned and marked out on a map in the year 1838. When a place is "laid out and platted," it means someone drew up a plan for its streets and building lots. Before it was officially called Canton, people sometimes used other names for the area, like Greensburg or Eggharbor.
Canton's Post Office
For many years, Canton had its own post office. It opened in 1835, which was even before the community was officially planned. This post office was very important for people to send and receive mail. It served the community for a long time, but it eventually closed down in 1905.
