Past Activities
In the 1930s, a radio station operated on Canyon Island. This station was run by a company called Pacific Alaska Airways. It helped with communication in the region.
Later, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game used the island. They set up a research station there. This station helped them study local wildlife.
Studying Salmon
One important part of the research was studying salmon. Scientists used special tools called fish wheels on the island. Fish wheels are large, rotating baskets. They catch fish as they swim upstream. This helps researchers count and study the salmon. It gives them important information about fish populations.
