Cape Fear Academy is a private school in Wilmington, North Carolina. It welcomes both boys and girls from pre-kindergarten (age 3) through 12th grade. The school first opened its doors on September 11, 1967.
It was named after an older school, Cape Fear Military Academy, which was a school for boys in Wilmington from 1868 to 1916. The first class of students at the current Cape Fear Academy graduated in 1971.

School History and Growth
Cape Fear Academy was started during a time when public schools were changing. Over time, the school became more welcoming to all students. The first black student graduated from the school in 1984.
In 2005, students at Cape Fear Academy voted to change their sports team name. They changed it from The Rebels to The Hurricanes. This shows how students can make a difference in their school community.
Campus and Facilities
Cape Fear Academy has different sections for students of all ages. There's a pre-kindergarten class for young children (ages 3.5 to 5). Then, there are classes for Kindergarten through 5th grade. Middle School includes grades 6 to 8, and Upper School covers grades 9 to 12.
The school is located on a large, 47-acre (19 ha) campus. It has many buildings for learning and activities. These include two main classroom buildings and a gymnasium with extra classrooms. There's also the Beane Wright Student Center, which is a place for students to gather. The school has modern science labs and many sports fields, including tennis courts.
In 2022, the school added more land to its campus. They bought an 11-acre (4.5 ha) plot of land next door.
School Accreditation and Support
Cape Fear Academy is "accredited" by important educational groups. This means these groups have checked the school and confirmed it meets high standards for learning. Some of these groups include the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Southern Association of Independent Schools.
The school is also part of several national and state organizations. These groups help independent schools share ideas and improve. Cape Fear Academy tries to make tuition affordable for families. They offer plans to help students in Middle and Upper School attend.
Student Life and Activities
Students at Cape Fear Academy have many chances to get involved. Starting in seventh grade, students can join sports teams. A large number of Upper School students (80%) play at least one sport. Popular sports include soccer, volleyball, tennis, basketball, and lacrosse.
The school also has many clubs. Some well-known clubs are Beta Club, National History Day, and National Honor Society. Students can also join YMCA's Youth and Government program.
If you love performing, the school has a great theater program. They put on many different types of plays, from Musicals to serious Dramas. Cape Fear Academy is the only high school allowed to perform at the famous Thalian Hall in Wilmington.
Upper School students have a student government. This group helps run things and has an Honor Council. The Honor Council helps deal with school rules and fairness. Students in ninth grade and above also need to earn "engagement units" each semester. These units encourage students to try new things and be active in their community. For example, they might attend a community event or help with a service project.
