Cape Runaway, known as Whangaparāoa in Māori, is a special place at the very eastern end of the Bay of Plenty region in New Zealand. It is located on the country's North Island. This area is about 157 kilometers northeast of Whakatāne and 65 kilometers west of East Cape.

The name "Cape Runaway" was given by Captain James Cook in 1769. He was an English explorer. During his first trip, some Māori people in canoes came close to his ship, the Endeavour. They seemed unfriendly. When Cook's crew fired a cannon shot, the Māori quickly left. That's how the cape got its name.
