He was a leader in the army of General José de San Martín. Captain Bermúdez fought during the Battle of San Lorenzo, an important battle in Argentina's history.

In 1991, something very unusual happened in Capitán Bermúdez. Pieces of the Soviet Union's Salyut 7 space station fell over the town. The space station had burned up as it re-entered Earth's atmosphere. It was supposed to fall into an empty part of the southern Pacific Ocean. However, it ended up showering debris over Capitán Bermúdez instead. Luckily, no one was hurt.
