Capitán Sarmiento is a town located in the Buenos Aires Province in Argentina. It's like the main town or capital of its own area, called the Capitán Sarmiento Partido. The town is known for its history and a special connection to the flag of Buenos Aires Province.
History of Capitán Sarmiento
How the Town Started
Capitán Sarmiento became an official town and its own 'partido' (which is like a county or district) on December 21, 1961. It was named after Domingo Fidel Sarmiento. He was the adopted son of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, who was a very important President of Argentina many years ago.
The Flag of Buenos Aires Province
Capitán Sarmiento became famous in 1995 because of a special event. There was a big vote across the entire Buenos Aires Province to choose a new flag. The winning design was created by some schoolboys from two schools right there in Capitán Sarmiento!
Because of this, the Governor at the time, Eduardo Duhalde, officially declared Capitán Sarmiento the "Cradle of the flag of Buenos Aires." This means it's recognized as the birthplace of the province's flag. To remember this important moment, a monument was built in the town in 2011. It stands as a symbol of the town's unique role in the province's history.
