Greater Reykjavík (called Höfuðborgarsvæðið in Icelandic, which means "The Capital Region") is a special area in Iceland. It's one of the eight main regions of the country. You can find it in the southwest part of Iceland.
This region is home to many people, with a population of 233,034 in 2020. The most important city in Greater Reykjavík is Reykjavík, which is also the capital city of all of Iceland! This area is made up of several towns and communities, which are called municipalities.

Greater Reykjavík is made up of seven different municipalities. Each one has its own unique character and a number of people living there.
Towns by Population
Here are the municipalities listed from the largest to the smallest based on how many people live in them (as of January 2020):
- Reykjavík: This is the biggest city and the capital, with 131,136 people.
- Kópavogur: A large town with 37,959 residents.
- Hafnarfjörður: Home to 29,971 people, known for its harbor.
- Garðabær: A growing town with 16,924 residents.
- Mosfellsbær: This municipality has 12,073 people.
- Seltjarnarnes: A smaller community with 4,726 people.
- Kjósarhreppur: The smallest municipality in the region, with only 245 people.
In total, all these municipalities together make up the 233,034 people living in Greater Reykjavík.
Where Are They Located?
The municipalities are spread out around Reykjavík:
- West of Reykjavík, you'll find Seltjarnarnes.
- To the northeast of Reykjavík is Mosfellsbær.
- South of Reykjavík, you'll find Kópavogur, Garðabær, Hafnarfjörður, and Álftanes.
