Where is Capitol Located?

Capitol is found in the southeastern part of Montana. Its exact location is 45°26′10″N 104°03′54″W / 45.43611°N 104.065°W / 45.43611; -104.065. It sits at an elevation of about 3,183 ft (970 m) above sea level.

This community is located right on the Little Missouri River, which is an important waterway in the area. It's also very close to the border of South Dakota. Capitol got its name from a famous natural landmark nearby called Capitol Rock, which is part of the Long Pine Hills.

Capitol's Post Office History

Capitol once had its own post office, which served the community for many years. It opened in 1891 and stayed open until 1982. After it closed, people living in Capitol started receiving their mail from the post office in a nearby community called Camp Crook, South Dakota.

A historic church called the Little Missouri Lutheran Church is located near Capitol. This church has been a central part of the community for a very long time. In 2014, the church celebrated its 125th anniversary, which is a huge milestone! This means the church was established way back in 1889, just five months before Montana officially became a state.
