A Look at the Capitole's History

How the Theatre Was Built

The Capitole theatre first opened its doors in 1903. An American architect named Walter S. Painter designed it. Later, in 1927, another architect named Thomas W. Lamb helped make some changes and updates to the building.

A Time of Change and Restoration

In the late 1980s, the theatre was closed for a while. It was empty and not used for some years. But don't worry, it didn't stay that way! In 1992, the Capitole got a full makeover. It was completely fixed up and restored to its former glory.

Becoming a Historic Landmark

Because of its importance and beautiful design, the Capitole was officially named a historic monument on May 3, 1984. This means it's a protected building. Then, on November 14, 1986, it received an even bigger honor. It was named a National Historic Site of Canada, showing how important it is to the country's history.
