Its Story
The Capitole de Québec first opened its doors in 1903. It was designed by an American architect named Walter S. Painter. Many years later, in 1927, it was updated by another architect, Thomas W. Lamb.
By the late 1980s, the theatre was closed and empty. But thankfully, it was completely restored in 1992. This brought the beautiful building back to life!
A Historic Landmark
Because of its importance and beauty, the Capitole was given special recognition.
- On May 3, 1984, it was officially named a historic monument by the Répertoire du patrimoine culturel du Québec. This means it's a protected part of Quebec's heritage.
- Then, on November 14, 1986, it became a National Historic Site of Canada. This shows it's important to the history of all of Canada.
