Capiibary is a town located in the San Pedro department of Paraguay.
What's in a Name?
The town of Capiibary gets its name from the Capiibary River. This river was named by the native people who spoke Classical Guarani.
The name Capiĭbarĭ comes from two Guarani words. Capiĭbá·r means "capybara" and ĭ means "water" or "river." So, the name means "river of capybaras." This is because many capybaras, which are large rodents, lived near the river.
Over time, the original Guarani pronunciation mixed with Spanish. This led to the name we know today, "Capiibary." Even in modern Guarani, it is often called "Kapi'ivary."
